Intimacy: Going Deeper With God
Making Big Decisions
‘The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and He delights in his way (Ps 37:23).
The waitress asked me if I was ready for her to take my order. Sweet girl. Probably in her early twenties, wearing black pants and a crisp white shirt. She held her pen waiting for my response as I scrolled the menu at one of Knoxville’s favorite restaurants. I looked up and asked, “Can I make a few changes to my salad?”
“Sure!” she said. “I’ll let the kitchen know.”
She didn’t know what she had given me permission to do.
“Well I’d like to have the “Black and Blue” salad. But instead of the steak, do you think they’d switch it for chicken? And I really don’t like blue cheese dressing or crumbles, soooo let’s take that off and just add more tomatoes and honey mustard. Croutons on the side. And do y’all have crackers?”
I handed her my menu with an apologetic grin. Knowing I had just stripped my “Black and Blue” salad bare and created a Red and White entrée.
I am the lady who has a “question about the menu.” I inquire. I want to know how the chef prepares his food. I ask about ingredients, oils, sides, and alternative options. It’s not that I’m picky, I’m just particular, and I know what I like.
The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord…
I can’t help but giggle thinking of the Lord ordering my steps similarly to my Black and Blue.
The same word for order, (kuwn) in the Hebrew, is a similar word as we use for ordering our food. The Lord isn’t picky, He is just particular. He knows what we need and he orders accordingly. He doesn’t take the menu lightly. He’s not a short-order God. He takes great thought of our every step, establishing each one precisely with customer details and ingredients.
For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. Jeremiah 29:11
Last week our plans topsy-turvied when my Grandmother took a fall and landed herself in the ER. Praise Jesus she didn’t break anything. But this fall, paired with other recent spills, confirmed what we already suspected. It is time to change course. And in her doctor’s stern words, “look into the next level of care.”
Decision-making causes me to rely heavily on our Ultimate Caregiver and seek Him with uncommon diligence. In a world of elderly care options, He is the only One who knows the best care plan for sweet Ethel. Because at the end of the day, even though she is my mamaw, she is His daughter first. And Daddy’s care best for their babies.
As we press into Going Deeper and fostering a more intimate relationship with God, I can’t miss the opportunity to encourage you today. He orders your steps. His involvement in your life is so intimate that He holds the menu of your steps, customizing what is best for your every need.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your paths. Proverbs 3:5
There are keys to unlocking God’s direction in our lives and they begin with acknowledging Him in all our ways. All of our ways. Every single way. Not just on Sunday. Not just at meals. Not only when you listen to K-LOVE. Acknowledge Him in the teeny-tiny details.
If you are in the midst of a big decision right now, then take a seat and grab your journal. If you aren’t but you know of someone who is, invite them to join us. They are in good company with me. This week, we will pursue Intimacy with God in a decision-making process.
Not that we are boxing God into formulas, but I want to encourage you with three quick tools that will help you make a big decision.
Are you deciding on school for next year? Or college for your senior? Are you looking to buy a house? Are you dating the guy you are supposed to marry? Should you say yes to that job offer? Go back for another degree? Are you suppose to accept that extra ministry responsibility?
You make big and small choices every single day. Unlock God’s direction in your life by acknowledging Him in those details this morning…. and come back here to learn step one of making God honoring decisions. (And I can use the company as I am walking through one of the biggest decisions I have made in years.)
And let us also learn from the waitress, waiting patiently for my order. As you stand and wait, with your pen held tight, God is customizing your menu — Tailor-making exquisite cuisine to meet your every need.
**Reflect and Respond**
A man’s heart plans his way, But the Lord directs his steps. (Proverbs 16:9)
In your journal, write down the big decision you are facing and claim that from this point forward you will acknowledge God in this process and in all your ways. Open you hands and offer it all to Him this morning. And have great peace that He is ordering your steps….
